Celebrating Excellence: U of G Alumni are Improving Life

On October 25, the University of Guelph Alumni Association (UGAA) hosted its annual Awards of Excellence ceremony at the Art Gallery of Guelph, with alumni, friends, family, past award recipients, UGAA board members, University staff, and faculty. The event recognizes remarkable alumni achievements across various fields, celebrating the impact of alumni contributions on the U of G community and beyond.

In addition to the Young Alumni Award, Alumni Volunteer Award, and Alumnus of Honour, the UGAA introduced two special, one-time awards this year. The inaugural UGAA Legacy Award was presented to Larry Thompson, BSc (Agr.) ’72, MSc ’76, and Bert Mitchell, BSc (Agr.) ’60, DVM ’64, who have been the driving force behind the longstanding U of G alumni reunion in Florida. For over 60 years, Larry and Bert have organized this annual gathering, which takes place on the first Wednesday of March, providing alumni in Florida with a chance to reconnect, reminisce, and stay connected to the University. Their dedication has fostered a lasting bond between alumni and their alma mater.

Another special honour went to Brad Rooney, BSc (Agr.) ’97, who was named Director Emeritus. He served on the UGAA board for 13 years in various roles, and has been instrumental in developing board structures and by-laws that continue to guide UGAA’s mission today. Brad's commitment to service, mentorship, and fostering a positive board culture has left an indelible mark on the association and is a testament to his love for the U of G community.

The UGAA is pleased to honour the following award winners who exemplify dedication, leadership, and commitment to making a difference:
